This page has page links to information about varieties that I introduce. Growing thousands of seedlings every season, means that I get to vet a lot of baby cactus looking for interesting morphological traits. I generally pull a few hundred seedlings a year for further observation. While I will eventually be breeding intentionally as the cactus I want to work with come into flowering, for now I am in a process of selection for certain traits.

I have had the opportunity to comb over what must be in the tens of thousands of seedlngs so far. The cactus introduced here, as of 2025, are the results of that selection. I don’t take naming and propagating a cactus too lightly. There are a lot of named clones out there already and naming willy nilly is just confusing and pointless. A plant has to stand out in some way from the crowd. I’m not even saying these are the very best, just the best ones according to what interests me or grabs my attention.

In selecting them, I’m comparing to other cactus I’ve collected and of course the many other seedlings. Out of the few hundred I usually pull each year from seedling flats, very few are kept. When the first years growth is done, I reject at least 2/3, often more. By the end of the second year the bulk of what is left are also rejected and used as grafting stock or sold leaving probably a dozen for less. Most of those I won’t continue to grow or propagate in the long run. I’ve even named and propagated one extensively, then decided not to release it because I felt that it didn’t live up to expectations.

I tend to select for specific things that trend toward the practical, but occasionally I save something because it is just especially pretty or uniquely shaped etc. The results are below. Once I dedicate myself to propagation of a clone for eventual release, cultivars end up on this page with a name. Some of these have been released and some are under propagation for release. I’m working hard on shortening the time it takes to propagate a lot of cactus with a small amount of material. Most typically though, the first cuts are going to end up on auction until there are a lot of copies and then I can start selling them in the webstore. The best way to keep tabs on what I’m releasing, as well as when seedlings drop, is to sub to the blog mail list.
